Isley Brothers, "Who's That Lady"

Leave it up to a new Swiffer commercial to remind me how awesome this song is. Oh, and fyi, I don't know who "Mofunkone" is and why they insist on keeping their email on the video for so long--but it's not very funktastic.

Beach Boys, "Good Vibrations"

When Paul McCartney shows up to my birthday parties, he never seems to have as much fun as he's having here:

The Hollies, "Long Cool Woman In A Black Dress"

The Hollies have a lot of good, random songs. I remember buying a greatest hits album and recognizing and loving nearly every song. For me, they're kind of a best kept secret, since you rarely hear about their music.

I might end up posting all of my favorites through the coming months, but for now, here's a crowd favorite:

Rolf Harris, "Tie Me Kangaroo Down, Sport"

I can't help but think that "kangaroo" is a euphemism for something else. Keep your kangaroo to yourself, pal.

Lionel Richie, "Hello"

There's nothing creepy about Lionel Richie stalking a blind woman--and doing that while singing the whole time. Nothing creepy at all.

But the best part is when he makes the phone call. If I had a nickel for every time I've picked up the phone only to hear Lionel Richie singing "Hello" to me, then I'd have enough nickels to fill a tacky clay sculpture of his head.

Tower of Power, "So Very Hard To Go"

This video is cool until about 20 seconds in, and then you see this guy's band. GAH! It's like taking every nerd stereotype and giving it an instrument. I won't deny that they make some good music, but they badly need Extreme Makeover: Band Edition.

Saturday Night Live, "Iran So Far"

Of all the hilarious things here, my favorite is the line "Hope you look in my eyes and say, 'I'm trippin' too.'" Good stuff all around.

(Sorry if Hulu plays a commercial on you)

The Andrea True Connection, "More, More, More"

This is what happens when you give a disco ball, a microphone, and a fringed-suede jacket to a porn star.

LCD Soundsystem, "North American Scum"

LCD Soundsystem is awesome, even if they're a little funky. The live version might take a few listens, just to get used to, but it's totally worth it:

Bulgarian Idol, "Ken Lee"

This is just a classic moment in reality television. My favorite part is at the end; it's like someone blows out the candle when she sings "more..."

Friday, January 22, 2010

Rolling Stones, "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction"

This one goes out to Conan O'Brien and his decision to splurge with the NBC company credit card by playing this song on one of his final "Tonight Show" broadcasts (which was a spoof, by the way). And like the blonde girl in the audience of this Rolling Stones performance, I'm somewhere between excited and sad--to the point of delirium.

The Concretes, "On The Radio"

I've never been shy about my fondness for the Swedes and their lovely music. I featured a clip a few months ago from Peter, Bjorn & John called "Young Folks." The woman singing in that song is Victoria Bergsman, who was once the lead singer for The Concretes. They made some pretty good music while Bergsman was with them, not the least of which is this jolly little tune from 2006:

The DeFranco Family, "Heartbeat, It's A Lovebeat"

The DeFranco Family? I liked them better when they were African-American and known as 'The Jackson 5."

Boney M., "Rasputin"

I'm not sure Boney M. can top his own "Boonoonoonoos," but putting on a creepy beard makes this a contender as one of his best videos. Every six months or so, it's fun to be decadent and drink deeply from the well of shamelessness that is Boney M.; after all, this video alone has had 7.7 million views on YouTube. But kids: Don't try this at home... Boney M. is a professional.

Frankie Valli, "Grease"

My favorite part of "Grease" is the first three minutes: The opening credits. Anything after that is... meh. But you've got to love a song that's written by Barry Gibb (of the Bee Gees), sung by Frankie Valli (of The Four Seasons), and drawn into a '70s-era cartoon.

Note: There are Swedish subtitles included for all of Justin's List's Swedish fan base. You're welcome, Sweden. We get Ikea; you get subtitles on one out of every 250 of my posted videos... not the fairest of trades, but it is what it is.

Garfunkel & Oates, "Pregnant Women Are Smug"

Anti-pregnancy sentiment is definitely a market that has untapped potential. It helps, of course, that this song is being sung by women; a man singing it would be criminal*.

*unless that man is Dennis Leary, and then it would probably be ok.

Teddy Pendergrass, "Close The Door"

It's a sad day when lovin' like this is gone forever. RIP, Teddy Pendergrass 1950-2010.

Snap, "Rhythm Is A Dancer"

Houston, we have a problem... a well-choreographed, very melodic problem.

Bruce Springsteen, "Streets Of Philadelphia"

I always forget about this Springsteen classic, since it's a movie soundtrack and not on one of his own albums (except for maybe a greatest hits collection). The whole Philadelphia soundtrack is great, and this is an awesome way to kick it off:

Soul Asylum, "Misery"

Wanna see how CDs are made? Wanna hear what post-Grunge sounds like? Well, if so, you're in luck! If not, you're probably not going to be fulfilled any other way from this thing.

This video was recommended by Steve Ketcham: a fellow Bearcat, fraternity brother, and the biggest University of Oregon football fan in his time zone!

David Bowie on "Extras"

"Extras" is one of the funniest TV shows in recent memory--and it doesn't hurt having David Bowie on as a cameo. If you've seen the show, re-enjoy this highlight; if not, please do yourself a favor and run--don't walk--to rent the DVDs.

"It's brilliant, Linda."

Sunday, January 10, 2010

Boz Scaggs, "Lowdown"

What's magical about this video is that Boz Scaggs comes out in an all-white suit, dancing to a funky, disco groove--but the guitarist looks like he walked straight out of the Allman Brothers Band. These are two cultures that shouldn't mix--especially now that he pulls up the curtain and a full orchestra is involved. Grab your washboard and your didgeridoo--we're gonna make this officially random!

George Strait, "Amarillo By Morning"

Most modern country music to me is like bad rock and roll. For me, George Strait is one of the last guys who really embraces the soul of country music--almost like a cowboy. And there's no place that loves him more than Texas, rightfully so. It doesn't hurt that he's got a gigantic star with the word "Texas" on it right behind him.

Friday, January 8, 2010

The Osmonds, "Yo-Yo"

The slow and agonizing path to despair is lined with Osmond brothers handing out yo-yo's.

Thursday, January 7, 2010

Elvis, "Rock-A-Hula Baby"

This is for all the passengers of Hawaiian Airlines Flight 39 who left Portland yesterday morning for Hawaii... then found themselves flying back an hour later, all because of a benign security concern. But when they finally got back on their way and arrived in Maui around 9:15 p.m. PST, they got their reward for all of that waiting: Being in Maui. So here's to enjoying it and not thinking at all about the flight back!

J. Kap, "I Owe?"

I found this on latfh.com, a great site to find people who are trying a little too hard--and only succeeding in an entirely ironic way. The video isn't good enough to make up for the bad song, and the song isn't good enough to make up for the bad video. So I'm not sure this will help with all of his money problems...

Tuesday, January 5, 2010

Gary Lewis & The Playboys, "Everybody Loves A Clown"

You know what's creepier than clowns? The kids in this video. It's like "Village of the Damned" was filming in the nearby soundstage and these kids wandered over...

Sunday, January 3, 2010

Phillip Michael Thomas, "Just The Way I Planned It"

I couldn't have planned it better myself.

Bobby Goldsboro, "Honey"

I'm thinking about switching haircuts to this one. Thoughts, anyone...?

Albert Hammond, "It Never Rains In Southern California"

Friday wasn't a great day in Southern California for the University of Oregon football team. But it's an honor to make it there, and the Ducks always have next year. And maybe Albert Hammond could make a halftime appearance? Only if he's wearing that rockin' red shirt!
