Peter Gabriel & Kate Bush, "Don't Give Up"

I'll tell you what won't be given up: This embrace. It goes on for six minutes like this. I mean, I'm all for a little hugging and whatnot, but after a while it's like... need the personal space back.

They've stopped singing and are now quietly embracing. Okay, that's it..."Get a room!"

Roxy Music, "More Than This"

It's always been my dream to sit in a theater alone and harmonize with myself on the big screen. And Roxy Music beat me to it 28 years ago. You win this time, Roxy Music--but I'll get mine.

Tom Cochrane, "Life Is A Highway"

Before the Rascal Flatts--in an era when Dave Letterman had hair--was a man named Tom Cochrane. And this is his song.

Honestly, I don't know anything else about the man. That's all I've got. But when I heard the country version recently on the radio, I was all, "That's not the original!" And here we are.

Tray-Mo & Lil' Jim, "IMPREGN8ED"

Jimmy Kimmell embracing the spirit of T-Pain is well worth the watch, not to mention the rich lyrics:

Night Ranger, "Sister Christian"

I still struggle to understand what this song is about or why people in the 1980s liked it so much. Perhaps it's the omnipotence of Night Ranger? Maybe the song calls out to the Sister Christian within each of us?

When you're playing in a leather shirt and your hair is permed, you can't lose.

Loretta Lynn & Jack White, "Portland, Oregon"

It's been so beautiful here lately, I had to give a nod to The Rose City with this song from the odd-but-musically-complemented duo of country music's Loretta Lynn and rock's Jack White. The video doesn't feature a naked person riding a bicycle, so it's not an entirely accurate portrayal of Portland, but it'll do.

Cheap Trick, "Dream Police"

If the Dream Police really existed, I think they'd be pretty bored with my dreams. I think last week I dreamt something about a walrus, and that's about the most interesting thing I have going on.

Madonna, "Like A Prayer"

"Like A Prayer" is considered one of the most controversial music videos of all time. It turns out--and who would've guessed--that burning crosses tend to evoke some pretty emotional responses from people.

Wreckx-N-Effect, "Rump Shaker"

I used to listen to this all the time when I was a kid--which begs the question: Did my parents know I was listening to this, and had they known, would they have let me keep listening to it?

Apparently, though, it was a pretty popular song--ranking at #2 on the pop charts behind Whitney Houston's cover of "I Will Always Love You." A fitting sentiment, I suppose...

David Gray, "Babylon"

This is a nice Friday afternoon song. I haven't really been able to sink my teeth into David Gray's music--or the way he swings his head all over the place when he sings--but this is a good one in his catalog:

The Clash, "London Calling"

I don't own much punk rock, but the album "London Calling" is one of my favorites of all time. You can't beat an album that opens up with this, then ends with "Train in Vain"--a close contender to the Rolling Stones' "Let It Bleed," which opens up with "Gimme Shelter" and ends with "You Can't Always Get What You Want." So if you don't have it yet, throw our some of your Green Day albums and make room for this one.

RuPaul, "Supermodel"

This is a surprisingly catchy tune. Who knew a drag queen could sing so well?! But he does, and he's sassy about it--which makes for a great video. Basically, take the epitome of a '90s-era music video... then feature it with a man dressed as a woman, and you're all set:

Rush, "Distant Early Warning"

When Slim Pickens rides the bomb at the end of Dr. Strangelove, it's funny. When a kid rides it, it's creepy--which is probably why Rush decided to put "Red Alert," "Incomplete," and "Obsolete" on the screen all sideways. Though I have to say, the kid seems to be enjoying the ride. Do I see Radio Flyer written on the side of that thing...?

Electric Light Orchestra, "Mr. Blue Sky"

I remember when this song had a huge comeback, especially in 2003 when it was used for Volkswagen's "Bubble Boy" commercial. Hopefully it created a whole new generation of kids who can appreciate ELO, but in reality it probably just helped us ELO fans/nerds better articulate our love for a truly underrated band.

Here's a version complete with refrain sing-along lyrics (Spoiler alert: All they say is "Mr. Blue Sky.")

Jamiroquai, "Virtual Insanity"

I was shopping today when this song came on in the store and an employee started rocking out to it. The other employee told me I should check this video out.

So I did. I knew Jamiroquai existed, but I never bothered to give him a good listen. Now I know why: I liked him better when he was known as Stevie Wonder. And he sounds a lot like Jason Mraz--which makes me think that he may have inspired Jason Mraz, which is even worse. So thanks for that, Jamiroquai.

Despite all of that, here's at least his video. I rarely turn down a recommendation; because if nothing else, it's entertaining to throw it to the wolves.

The Cardigans, "Carnival"

I've expressed my nerd love for Swedish bands, so it was only a matter of time before I got to The Cardigans. They're probably best known for their hit "Lovefool," but I like "Carnival" better. After all, it's in the original "Austin Powers"--instantly making it cool by association. And what I like about this video is that they indulge themselves by going retro, which is what I love about their music. If you get a chance to listen to their album Life, it's not a bad way to spend an hour.

Barry White, "Never, Never Gonna Give You Up"

To all the people stuck inside by the snow across America: Put on some Barry White tunes and make the best of your cabin fever.

Tay Zonday, "Christmas Star"

I missed this gem over the holidays, and it's a shame--because what a gem it truly is. Who knew singing about Proposition 8 could be so exciting? You know what's even more exciting: The second half of the video, explaining how awesome the first half was. Tay explains how much of a pain it is to make his music videos, but the thing is--and tell me if I'm wrong here--I kind of feel like chimpanzees have made more elaborate productions.

Why can't we go back to a simpler Tay? A Tay who wasn't carried away by the floods of a chocolate rain or by a tsunami of delicious and refreshing Cherry Chocolate Dr. Pepper...

Moody Blues, "Tuesday Afternoon"

The Flaustache is back in full effect, this time with ultratight pants that look like clouds. He's there for the whole song, but only plays the final 45 seconds. And that's fine, because the Flaustache never lets a crowd down. That's not the Flaustache way.

Queen, "We Are The Champions"

Congrats to the New Orleans Saints on their first ever Super Bowl victory. And kudos to Betty White and Abe Vigoda for taking some hits out on the gridiron (even if it was just a Snickers commercial...)

Louis Armstrong, "When The Saints Go Marching In"

I don't have any real reason to pick a favorite for the Super Bowl, other than the fact that the Colts are an AFC rival to my KC Chiefs, and they've won two Super Bowls--whereas the Saints have won none. So, what the hell, go Saints!

Ludacris, "One More Drink"

Happy Saturday morning, playas. Here's hoping no one lost an arm.

Friday, February 5, 2010

Jefferson Airplane, "Somebody To Love"

I haven't posted something from the Monterey Pop Festival in a while, so today seemed like a good day to do it. This is Jefferson Airplane before they became Jefferson Starship before they became Starship before they played live in Bakersfield, which saddened me.

So grab your purple acid (and forget about your crappy brown Woodstock acid) and get your tickets to the show!

Thursday, February 4, 2010

Paul McCartney, "Birthday"

Happy Birthday to my beautiful wife, Anji! If I could package up Paul McCartney from 1990--outfit included--and give it to her for her birthday, I absolutely would.

Wednesday, February 3, 2010

Kool & The Gang, "Fresh"

Doesn't get much more "fresh" than this.

Tuesday, February 2, 2010

Air Supply, "Every Woman In The World"

This ranks pretty high on the list of Laziest Videos Of All Time. Who storyboarded this thing? "Okay, now, I envision that as the group gets ready to sing--we'll film it. And when they sing in the studio--we'll film that, too. Sitting on a couch? Film it! But don't film them performing live or anything else exciting... that's too much." You can't even repeat a pensive walk on the beach?! You're falling short of the Air Supply standard, guys.
